"Operation Adelmo"
Sporting a horned Wagnerian helmet and other grand costumes, playing instruments ranging from a ukulele to a kazoo and delivering classic arias such as "Vesti la giubba" in a luscious baritone, Adelmo Guidarelli makes mirth and music in "Operation Adelmo."
Comedy usually rules as Guidarelli "makes parallels on how our pop culture rapes and pillages opera," complete with snatches from Warner Bros. cartoon parodies like "What's Opera, Doc?" Education also is served as an Elvis Presley hit, "It's Now or Never," is revealed to be really "O Solo Mio."
"There's even a nice Andrew Lloyd Webber joke," notes Guidarelli, who was a student of the late basso Jerome Hines and a frequent performer with the New Jersey State Opera.
"We'll be having a lot of fun with some wonderful music over 90 minutes," promises the former resident of Parsippany and Randolph. "But I mean no disrespect for opera -- because, after all, that's what I do."
